Emperor Moth | Saturnia pavonia EGGS
British Emperor Moth (Saturnia pavonia), also known as the Small Emperor Moth, is a striking species in the Saturniidae family. Native to much of Europe, it can be found across the UK, particularly in woodlands, heathlands, gardens, and meadows. This moth is easily recognizable due to its beautiful coloration and distinctive eyespots on the hindwings. These eyespots serve as a defense mechanism, helping to deter potential predators by creating the illusion of a larger, more dangerous creature.
The Emperor Moth is fairly small and has a wingspan of 5-8cm. The male forewings are light brown with orange and black markings, while the hindwings are orange with prominent black eyespots. Female moths have similar patterning, however they are silver-grey in colour, often with tinges of pink. Its body is covered in fur, adding to its camouflage when resting. Caterpillars are beautiful and highly variable with patterns of green and black.
