The Clipper butterfly (Parthenos sylvia) is a stunning species from the family Nymphalidae. It is found in tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, including parts of India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, and throughout Southeast Asia - with different subspecies occurring across its range. It is particularly admired for its vibrant, iridescent coloration and distinctive wing patterns.

The Clipper butterfly has a striking appearance, with colourful wings in shades of blue, green, or orange, adorned with white spots. The underside of the wings is brown with intricate patterns, which helps camouflage the butterfly when it is resting on tree bark or foliage.

Parthenos sylvia thrives in forested areas, often near streams or in tropical and subtropical forests. It can be found in a wide range of habitats, from lowland forests to montane regions, and is commonly seen in both protected and disturbed environments, though it prefers areas with dense vegetation and water sources.

Caterpillars feed on Passifloraceae plants, particularly species of Adenia and Zanonia, which are crucial for their development. They do not seem to accept Passiflora species as a substitute. Breeding occurs easily in a butterfly house but success in rearing larvae requires these specific host plants.

The Clipper butterfly is known for its active and rapid flight, often seen flitting through the forest in search of nectar. It prefers flying in the lower to middle levels of the forest and tends to remain close to its host plants. Males are territorial and may defend their areas in sunny spots. Despite its vivid appearance, it is often elusive and blends into its environment when at rest, especially due to its cryptic undersides.
