The butterfly referred to as Papilio stabilis is considered a subspecies or a localized form of the Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes), a member of the Swallowtail family Papilionidae. This butterfly is native to parts of Central America, primarily Costa Rica, and exhibits characteristics similar to polyxenes but adapted to its specific environment.

Papilio polyxenes stabilis closely resembles other subspecies of the Black Swallowtail. Its wings are predominantly black with bold yellow and blue markings. The forewings feature rows of yellow spots, while the hindwings display vibrant blue patches and a distinct orange-red eyespot near the base. Unlike some other swallowtail butterflies, the tail-like extensions on the hindwings are more subdued or slightly shorter in this subspecies.

Like other Black Swallowtails, P. polyxenes stabilis is a strong flier and frequently visits gardens and wildflowers in search of nectar. The males are territorial, often patrolling areas to attract females. The species' adaptability allows it to thrive in both wild and cultivated landscapes.

Papilio polyxenes stabilis is not currently considered endangered, but its survival depends on the availability of host plants and suitable habitats. Conservation of its natural environment and promotion of native nectar and larval food plants in gardens can support its populations.

This butterfly is a beautiful and ecologically important pollinator that highlights the biodiversity of Central America. Its adaptability and vibrant appearance make it a favorite among butterfly enthusiasts.
