Papilio palinurus, commonly known as the Emerald Swallowtail, is a striking butterfly species in the family Papilionidae, native to Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, Malaysia, and parts of Indonesia. With a wingspan of 9–11 cm, this butterfly is admired for its size and vibrant green and iridescent coloring. The forewings are dark with a greenish or bluish iridescent band running diagonally, while the hindwings are bright green with black borders and elongated swallowtail extensions.

The Emerald Swallowtail inhabits tropical rainforests, both in lowland and montane areas, where it is often found near host plants like citrus species from the Rutaceae family. The females lay their eggs on these plants, and the caterpillars, which are green and marked with distinct patterns, feed on their leaves.

Adults are active during the day, feeding on nectar from flowers such as lantana. The males are territorial and will chase other males from their areas. Known for their graceful flight, these butterflies are fast fliers and skilled at hovering around flowers.

Although not currently endangered, Papilio palinurus faces threats from habitat loss due to deforestation. Conservation efforts focused on preserving rainforests are important for the survival of this beautiful and ecologically important species.
