The oriental fire-bellied toad (Bombina orientalis) is a small, brightly colored amphibian native to Northeast Asia, including China, Korea, and parts of Russia. It is best known for its striking appearance, with a green, warty dorsal surface and a vivid orange-red belly marked with black spots. The bright underside serves as a warning coloration, signaling its toxicity to potential predators.
These toads thrive in a variety of habitats, including forests, wetlands, and grasslands, often near slow-moving or stagnant water bodies like ponds, marshes, and rice paddies. They are semiaquatic and spend significant time both in and out of water. Their diet consists of small invertebrates such as insects, worms, and spiders.
Oriental fire-bellied toads are social animals, often seen in groups, and communicate through distinctive vocalizations. During breeding, males call to attract females, and eggs are laid in water. The tadpoles undergo metamorphosis into terrestrial juveniles.
