Nudaurelia dione, the Yellow or Golden Emperor, is a species of moth belonging to the family Saturniidae. Native to parts of Africa, it is characterized by its large size, robust body and vibrant coloration, which typically includes shades golden-yellow, with brown or grey patterning, and pinkish or red eye markings on the hindwings. These colors often serve as camouflage when at rest, or warning signals to predators when disturbed - prominent eye-like patterns on their wings are a feature believed to deter potential threats by mimicking the eyes of larger animals.

The caterpillars are herbivorous, feeding on a variety of host plants, which influences their distribution and ecological impact. This moth species is also of interest in scientific research, particularly in the study of viruses. Nudaurelia dione's larvae are host to the Nudaurelia β virus, used in biotechnology for studying viral assembly and protein expression. Despite its ecological and scientific importance, habitat loss and environmental changes pose threats to its population, highlighting the need for conservation efforts. Our stock is supplied from butterfly farms in Kenya, which supports local communities and promotes habitat conservation.
