Glasswing Butterfly | Greta oto EGGS
Greta oto, commonly known as the Glasswing butterfly, is a remarkable species in the family Nymphalidae. Native to Central and South America, it inhabits tropical rainforests, where it is typically found near forest edges and clearings. This butterfly is renowned for its unique, transparent wings, which appear as if made of glass. The clear sections are bordered by dark brown, orange, and white, making it both delicate and striking in appearance.
The transparent wings of Greta oto are a result of microscopic structures that minimize light scattering, rendering them nearly invisible to predators. This exceptional camouflage allows it to evade detection, blending seamlessly into its environment.
The caterpillars feed on toxic plants of the Cestrum family, which make the butterfly distasteful to predators even as an adult. This chemical defense is further complemented by its inconspicuous wing design. Adult glasswings are active during the day, feeding on nectar from flowers and playing an important role in pollination.
