Autumn Leaf Butterfly | Doleschalia bisaltide PUPAE
Doleschalia bisaltide, commonly known as the autumn leaf butterfly or the leafwing, is a fascinating butterfly native to South and Southeast Asia, including countries like India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and the Philippines. This butterfly belongs to the Nymphalidae family and is known for its remarkable camouflage. When its wings are closed, the underside mimics the appearance of a dried leaf, complete with vein-like patterns and shades of brown and gray. This adaptation helps the butterfly blend seamlessly with leaf litter on the forest floor, hiding from predators.
The upper side of the wings, in contrast, is bright and vivid, typically orange with black markings in males, while females may have more subdued tones. The wingspan ranges between 60-80 mm, making it a medium-sized butterfly. The autumn leaf butterfly thrives in tropical and subtropical forests and is often seen in wooded areas and gardens.
The caterpillars feed on plants from the Acanthaceae family, such as Asystasia and Ruellia species. Like other butterflies, Doleschalia bisaltide undergoes a full metamorphosis. Known for its unique appearance and excellent camouflage, this butterfly is admired by lepidopterists and nature enthusiasts alike.
