Brahmaea hearesyi, commonly known as Heares's Owl Moth, is a large and striking insect belonging to the family Brahmaeidae. Found in the Himalayas, regions of China, Malaysia, Burma, and the Philippines. This species is renowned for its impressive size and intricate, psychedelic wing patterns, with a wingspan reaching up to 20 centimeters. Its intricate wing patterns, resembling owl eyes, serve as a defense mechanism to deter predators. Caterpillars are spectacular and grow for about 4-6 weeks, feeding on host plants including Privet, Lilac, and Ash. Privet is particularly useful early in the season as it is evergreen. There can be one or multiple broods in a year, depending on local conditions (colder regions will only have one).
