The Chinese Oak Silkmoth, Antheraea pernyi, is one of the easiest moths to rear and it produces huge caterpillars! Highly recommended for people with any level of experience, this is a very enjoyable species to keep at home. This species is commonly farmed in various parts of Asia for its silk cocoons, and actually does very well outdoors in temperate regions as it is a hardy species. Caterpillars are a lot of fun due to their massive size and easy handling, and will drink droplets of water from leaves when misted. Host plants are numerous, but I recommend selecting one with large leaves to satiate the caterpillar’s voracious appetite! This is wild stock fresh from China.

Difficulty - One of the easiest species (1/10)

Host plants - Oak; Birch; Willow; Maples; Alder; Cherry; Plum; Hawthorn

Conditions - Room temperature or securely outside

Lifecycle - Two broods annually with second overwintering as cocoons
