This species is renowned for its impressive size and intricate, psychedelic wing patterns, with a wingspan reaching up to 20 centimeters. Its intricate wing patterns, resembling owl eyes, serve as a defense mechanism to deter predators. Caterpillars are spectacular and grow for about 4-6 weeks, feeding on host plants including Privet, Lilac, and Ash. Privet is particularly useful early in the season as it is evergreen. There can be one or multiple broods in a year, depending on local conditions (colder regions will only have one).
