Eryphanis polyxena PUPAE

from £24.50

A mix of species which may include: Caligo atreus; memnon; eurilochus; brasiliensis; oileus; illioneus; telamonius. Species will vary over the year as/when each species pupates - these take 6+ weeks to grow from hatchling to pre-pupa, another 3-4 weeks as pre-pupae and pupae, and then a maturation period for the adult butterflies before breeding. In all, this means that each species will be available throughout the year in 12-week cycles, which I have timed to give the greatest mix at any one time, however no single species can be guaranteed - If you require a particular species, you can order these separately.

Owl butterflies (Caligo) are some of the largest butterflies in the world, characterised by large eye markings on the underside of their hindwings. There are many species in this family - I breed around 7 species (illioneus, memnon, brasiliensis, eurilochus, atreus, telamonius, oileus) in the butterfly house. Eggs are randomly collected so what you receive could be any of these, or a mix.

Host plants include: Canna lilies, Bamboo, Heliconia, Banana (Musa, Ensete)

Caterpillars grow for about 6-8 weeks before pupating. The pupae are a curious shape, mimicking the shape and look of a dead leaf. Adult butterflies will emerge 2-3 weeks later, feeding on fruit juices. They go mad for fermenting banana and pineapple in the butterfly house! Butterflies take about 2 weeks to mature before mating and beginning to lay eggs.

Their lifespan can extend to several months if food is abundant and conditions allow. Personally, I have had illioneus and eurilochus live for almost six months. They also do not require particularly hot temperatures, and often still fly down to 12 degrees celcius.
