Samia cynthia advena is a subspecies of the Ailanthus/Tree of Heaven Silk Moth. This moth is part of the Giant Silkmoth family, Saturniidae, and is closely related to the better-known Eri silk moth (Samia ricini). It has beautiful golden-brown wings which can span between 7 and 12cm. Breeding occurs very easily, and caterpillars can be reared on several host plants, including: Ailanthus, Sweet Gum, Willow, Cherry, Privet. These cocoons are dormant and will emerge in response to warmer temperatures in the spring (or sooner if you wish).
