Antheraea yamamai, commonly known as the Japanese oak silk moth, is a large and captivating moth species native to East Asia, particularly Japan. Renowned for its impressive size, it boasts a wingspan that can reach up to 15 centimeters. Its wings exhibit a rich range of colors, including various shades of brown, yellow, and orange. The Japanese oak silk moth has a relatively short adult lifespan, during which it does not feed and relies solely on energy stored during the caterpillar stage. Eggs overwinter, hatching early the following spring when buds begin to open on trees such as: Oak, Hawthorn, Birch, Willow, Beech, Sweet Gum, Cherry, among multiple others.
