Marbled Newts (Triturus marmoratus) are a large, beautiful species from Western Europe. They occur predominantly in France and Spain - further south they are replaced by the smaller Triturus pygmaeus. Breeding may occur any time from autumn until late spring, depending on local climatic conditions. Larvae are as easy to rear as any newt species. Being a member of the Crested Newt family, marmoratus males develop a tall, striped crest during the breeding season, used to attract a mate. Each female lays two hundred or more eggs each breeding season. The overall lifespan of this species is around 10-15 years on average.
