Smerinthus planus, commonly known as the Eastern Eyed Hawk Moth, is a fairly large hawk moth species. With a wingspan of around 7 to 9 centimeters, it showcases intricate patterns and eye spots in various shades of brown and pink. Both the adult and larva closely resemble ocellata, however planus tends to be notably larger and bulkier, in my experience. As a member of the Sphingidae family, it is known for its swift and agile flight. This species is widespread in Asia and parts of Eastern Europe, often found in deciduous forests and areas with Birch, Willow, and Poplar trees, its preferred larval host plants. Care is the same as for our own eyed hawks, but planus cannot be released as it is not native. There can be between one and three broods per year, depending on the geographical origin of the stock - this line produces 2 broods.
