This mix refers to members of the Old World Swallowtail (Papilio machaon) species complex - a group of distinct but evolutionarily related butterflies. The actual species included will vary across the season, but may include:

  • European Swallowtail, Papilio machaon

  • Japanese Swallowtail, P. hippocrates

  • Black Swallowtail, Papilio polyxenes asterias

  • Costa Rican Black Swallowtail, Papilio stabilis

  • Anise Swallowtail, Papilio zelicaon

The name ‘Old World Swallowtail’ refers specifically to Papilio machaon, named due to its presence throughout the Old World - broadly across Eurasia and some parts of Africa - however, many of the species in this complex actually occur in the ‘New World’ (particularly North America).

These butterflies breed freely in the butterfly house, and due to their close evolutionary relation are capable of interbreeding to create hybrids, therefore the mix may include these pure species but also some colourful crosses! Again because of their close relation, the hybrids that occur between these species can continue breeding for multiple generations as they are completely fertile. Eggs are collected from the host plants in the butterfly house on the day of shipping - Fennel is the primary host, but you can also offer Dill, Parsely, Carrot, Parsnip and related plants.

These are not suitable for beginners but if you have been able to rear the Citrus mix or similar species you should be well equipped for these!
